Vieques is East of mainland Puerto Rico and is part of the Virgin Islands eco-system. Beaches are the most beautiful and undeveloped. Contrary to news articles about former military demonstrations, Vieques is calm, peaceful and friendly. It is also noisy with everyone living outside and wild paso fino horses and chickens running freely.
This is one of the last "undiscovered" Caribbean islands. The roads are mostly unpaved, the beaches plentiful and gorgeous, the weather uniformly tropical. There are good food restaurants, local food vendors, and small tropical food stores. You probably need to rent a car.
